About Reactive Energy Units
In alternating current (AC) power systems, reactive energy is the energy that "bounces" back and forth between the power source and reactive loads (like motors and transformers). While it doesn't do useful physical work, it is necessary to maintain the electromagnetic fields that allow the equipment to operate.
Volt-Ampere Reactive Hour (VARh)
The VARh is the fundamental unit of reactive energy. It measures the accumulation of reactive power (measured in VAR) over a period of one hour. Monitoring reactive energy is critical for large facilities because utilities often charge penalties for poor power factors caused by excessive reactive power.
kVARh, MVARh, and GVARh
For industrial and grid-level applications, multiples of the VARh are used. The Kilovolt-Ampere Reactive Hour (kVARh) is standard on commercial electricity bills. Megavolt-Ampere Reactive Hours (MVARh) and Gigavolt-Ampere Reactive Hours (GVARh) are used by utility companies to manage grid stability and design power factor correction systems like capacitor banks.
