About Mass and Weight Units
Mass is a measure of the amount of matter in an object, while weight is the force exerted by gravity on that mass. In everyday usage, they are often treated as the same. Different parts of the world use different systems to measure them.
Metric System (g, kg, mt)
The metric system is standard globally. The gram (g) is the base unit. A kilogram (kg) equals 1,000 grams and is the SI base unit of mass. For very large quantities, the metric ton (mt or tonne) is used, which equals 1,000 kilograms.
Imperial System (oz, lb, t)
Commonly used in the US and the UK. An ounce (oz) is equal to exactly 28.3495 grams. A pound (lb) consists of 16 ounces (453.592 grams). A US short ton (t) equals 2,000 pounds, which is slightly lighter than a metric ton.
