About Apparent Power Units
In an alternating current (AC) circuit, apparent power is the product of the root mean square (RMS) voltage and RMS current. It represents the total power flowing in the system, combining both real (active) power and reactive power.
Volt-Ampere (VA)
The Volt-Ampere is the base unit of apparent power. Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) and small transformers are typically rated in VA. It differs from Watts (W) due to the power factor in AC circuits.
kVA, MVA, and GVA
For larger electrical installations, multiples of VA are used. A Kilovolt-Ampere (kVA) is 1,000 VA, commonly used for industrial generators and facility power ratings. Megavolt-Amperes (MVA) and Gigavolt-Amperes (GVA) are used for large-scale power plants and regional high-voltage transmission networks.
