About Power Units
In physics, power is the amount of energy transferred or converted per unit time. In the International System of Units (SI), the unit of power is the watt (W), equal to one joule per second.
Watt (W) & Milliwatt (mW)
The watt is the base unit of power. It is commonly used to express the rate of energy conversion or transfer with respect to time. A milliwatt (mW) is one-thousandth of a watt, frequently used to measure the power output of small electronic devices like lasers and audio signals.
Kilowatt, Megawatt, and Gigawatt
For larger applications, metric prefixes are added. A kilowatt (kW) is 1,000 watts, commonly used to rate the power output of household appliances and car engines. A megawatt (MW) is one million watts, used for large electric motors or regional power grids. A gigawatt (GW) is one billion watts, typically used for the output of large power plants and national energy infrastructure.
