Understanding Earthquake Magnitude
Earthquake magnitude is a logarithmic measure of earthquake size. An increase of 1.0 in magnitude represents roughly a 32-fold increase in released energy.
Magnitude Impact Scale
- M 3.0 - 3.9:Often felt by people indoors; hanging objects may swing, but no damage.
- M 4.0 - 4.9:Noticeable shaking of indoor items, rattling noises, minor wall cracks possible.
- M 5.0 - 5.9:Can cause moderate damage to poorly built structures, heavy furniture may fall.
- M 6.0 - 6.9:Strong earthquake. Can cause severe damage in populated areas up to tens of miles across.
- M 7.0+:Major earthquake. Causes serious damage over large areas and can trigger massive tsunamis.
